Newton Aycliffe Youth and Community Centre was the venue for the Half Term holiday pop up PLAY CAFÉ on Tuesday 28th May. Working with Beki Metcalfe, the centre manager, this Holiday Hunger project was able to provide lunch, play and groceries for struggling families of school aged children, missing their breakfast clubs and Free School Meals. Nearly thirty people enjoyed the event in the Community Centre, which is very much at the heart of the Town Centre.

Walker’s Butchers, Simpasture Gate, generously donated pies and cakes towards the lunch. These were popular and served with traditional mushy peas or baked beans. A big thank you. TESCO provided bread and fresh fruit for the meal, to make sandwiches and fruity desserts! Thanks to Shirley the Tesco Community Champion.

PLAY CAFÉ is supported by County Durham Food Bank, our seven County Councillors through the GAMP funding received, Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club, TESCO Store in Newton Aycliffe, and ‘Big Club’ members and staff.

Here’s what one family thought:- “Café today was great and had a fantastic feel to it. Kids really enjoyed it and lunch was lovely. You ladies and gentlemen really do amazing things for us families. Thank you.”

That ‘Thank you’ goes to all of the project’s supporters and volunteers, without whom, Play Café could not respond to the need. Thank you NAYCC for allowing us to pop up this week!
