Sedgefield Water Polo Club from Aycliffe sent two young teams up to Newcastle to play the Northumbia University Women and Men’s teams.
The young Sedgefield girls team was superbly led by Carol Mohan who hasn’t played competively for a few years, but before that played over 100 games for GB and is the only British girl to ever be the leading scorer in the European Championships.
In a very competitive game the young Sedgefield team managed to come out on top 8-5. The goals scored were shared between Mohan, Panna Csano 14, who is from one of the great countries of Polo Hungary, Emily Pilkington 15, Holly Short 18, Ashley Boardman 21 and Rhiannon Foulds 18.
Young goalkeeper Jessica Webb 11 was voted player of the game for a very mature performance in goal. The other members of the Sedgefield team were Poppy Stephenson 11, Hollie Turnbull 13, Kate Harrison 12.
In the Men’s game Sedgefield dominated from the start with their tremendous fitness and fast Counter attack overwhelming the much older student team 19-9. Mathew Calvert 20 and ex GB junior led the team with great maturity scoring and creating many goals.
The goals were spread throughout the team. consisting of James Pratt 17, John Pratt 16, Adam Courtley 17, Ben Turnbull 16, Connor Keeble 14, Michael Cousins 14, Kris Egginton 14, Richard Murray 14, Ben Stephenson 13, Adam Woods 19, Sebastian Reichel 18, Jake Plant 15.
