The Durham Wildcats, based at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, start the new year with a home game against Cheshire Phoenix. Cheshire travelled to Newton Aycliffe twice last season and the Wildcats got the better of them on both occasions. Cheshire, who will travel with former Wildcat Chris Pearce in their squad, are hovering around the play-off places and it is a must win game for the Wildcats who still harbour their own play-off ambitions.

The Wildcat squad have been depleted due to illness in recent weeks and it may still be too early for a Paul Elderkin return but Head Coach, Dave Elderkin, is clearly looking forward to having something close to a full strength squad on show:

“I’m really looking forward to this phase of the season. The squad has now been together for a few months and the chemistry is now there. We were undermined by our inability to get everyone on the court fit and healthy in the latter part of 2012 but that is hopefully behind us now. A win against Cheshire would be a great way to start the New Year and kick start our play-off charge.”

Whilst senior players have been out of the equation it has provided an opportunity for the clubs youngsters to shine. Tom Noble, who studied at Woodham School until 2010, has been one of the youngsters to get his chance but has clearly enjoyed every minute of the experience:

“I was shocked when I was asked to join the first team but am really enjoying things. The squad have been very welcoming and I’m looking forward to getting some minutes playing alongside them.”

Your next opportunity to see the Wildcats is January 6th at home to Cheshire Phoenix. Tip-off is at 16:00 with the doors opening at 15:00.
