Visit of “Time Out for Men” to Planet Leisure in Newton Aycliffe 9th March 2018, a group of men from the Methodist Church in and around the town.
They meet four times a year with an activity or visit arranged, to share in mutual support and friendship.
One of the members of the group is Michael Thompson, a supporter and fund raiser for the charity CALM: Campaigns Against Living Miserably. The organisation provides a free helpline to men who don’t know where else to turn; it aims to keep men alive by talking.
The T.O.M. group fully support Michael, recognising the importance of this kind of help and awareness raising.
He raises funds through sponsorship of his cross-country running.
“T.O.M. is unusual”, said Michael “It is a men’s group primarily for socialising”. Another member of the group said; “The work of CALM and Michael’s fund-raising efforts, reminded us of the number of men, particularly in the 25-45 age group, who are at greatest risk from suicide”.
“And what we do at T.O.M. is an example of the kind of social interaction that helps men talk”.
