Chairman of Horndale Residents Association, Philip Clark, resigns at the AGM in December. He made the decision earlier this year due to personal and health reasons which proved to be the right choice after his recent health scare.
The Association was set up in 2012 by a small group of local residents with determination to raise £40,000 to build a Multi-Use Games Area for the youngsters of the local area. The M.U.G.A. was opened in October 2014 and has proved a great success. The committee stated they would stand down once this project was complete, however while working on the project they realised they could do more for the community.
Over the last 3½ years the group have worked with other groups and charities to make the lives of the local community better and create a nicer place to live and work.
The group has secured funding from the Big Lottery and G.A.M.P. to organise Family Fun days out at affordable prices – £5 or under, with trips to Whitby, Halloween at Beamish, Scarborough, Sunderland Dogs a comedy night with comedian Patrick Monahan and more, too many to mention. They have also assisted residents with various problems working with the Police, Councillors, Livin and Schools to enhance the lives of all Newtonians.
The group has a healthy bank balance to give them a good start in the New Year while they secure further funding to continue the good work. While they recognise the work of all the committee, it is sad to report one of the first members, Kath Jackson, passed away last week,
Kath was instrumental in setting up the Association and stood as secretary until her health made it difficult for her to continue, however she still assisted the group helping at events and attending meetings. Kath worked in the community for a number of years with various groups and will be sadly missed, but not forgotten.
