On Tuesday 4th November a group of 18 pupils from Stephenson Way competed in an Indoor Athletics event at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. The pupils were split into two groups, girls and boys. Both groups took part in track and field events. Events included ‘Speed Bounce’, where competitors jumped backwards and forwards over a soft hurdle for 30 seconds. One year 6 pupils said ‘I think I`ll do well because I`ve been practising at home.’ Other events included Vertical Jump, where one pupil, Katie, had 3 attempts achieving 36cm. The girl’s 4×1 relay race team did particularly well, coming second out of the teams which took part.
A klaxon signalled teams to change events half way through the afternoon.  After this, success for Stephenson Way came in the triple jump and the obstacle races.  During all activities, everybody who competed made a great effort and were very supportive of each other.
At the conclusion of the competition, it was time for the medals ceremony. The medals were presented by the School Games Organisers, who planned an afternoon to remember for the seven participating schools.  Stephenson Way felt the tension as the final placings were announced.  Taking 3rd place was a huge achievement and everybody concerned was delighted that the school had improved upon last year’s 4th place finish.
Stephenson Way would like to thank the organisers for a very enjoyable competition, and next year they will do their very best to improve even further.
