Greenfield Arts have been a major part of the Cornish Centenary celebrations this year and have offered a programme of creative events and activities alongside their exhibition ‘Norman Cornish: A Man of Destiny’, engaging the community to be inspired by the artist’s life and work.

Norman Cornish MBE is a well-respected and much-loved artist from the north east and his work is held in public and private collections throughout the UK and abroad. The centenary exhibitions are a celebration of his life and work and have included six exhibitions throughout Durham. Greenfield Arts were delighted to welcome over 1500 visitors to the exhibition and 650 who participated in the programme.

Greenfield Arts have provided opportunities for the community and wider public to understand more about his work and respond in various creative ways. Dorothy Cornish, daughter-in-law to the artist, has recently brought a unique insight to young people by leading creative workshops for primary schools in our region. It was wonderful to see young students write creative prose inspired by his artwork, immediately recognising and responding to his sense of beauty in the everyday.

Greenfield Arts are thrilled to be able to provide a creative response to the artist’s work and are hosting a response exhibition entitled ‘Inspired by Cornish’. The men’s Cree group from Greenfield Arts and students from Greenfield Community College have been working exploring the social context of his work. Working alongside spoken work artist Tony Gadd and visual artist Richard Bliss, the groups have brought together a collection of inspirational artwork.

There will be a celebration event, ‘Inspired by Cornish’, on Monday 16th December 2019 from 13:30 to 15:00 and the exhibition will run until Friday 20th December 2019. The Greenfield Gallery is open from 10:00 – 21:00 on Monday to Thursday and from 10:00 – 16:00 on Fridays.
