Local cyclist is set to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support team by cycling 300 miles in 24 hours. Gordon Panicca, 51, from School Aycliffe, decided to take up the challenge riding from Newcastle to London as a way of saying thank you, for the wonderful care his family received a few years ago.

Back in 2007, his wife, Moira and her sisters, were devastated to learn their mother, Elizabeth Duffy, was diagnosed with cancer. They relied heavily on the care and support offered by the dedicated staff from the Macmillan team. After a brave battle, Elizabeth sadly passed away and the family could not have got through those difficult days without their support.

Gordon has cycled for many years and is not a stranger to long distance endurance events. He has raced from Paris to Brest to Paris, 750 miles, several times with an amazing PB of 64 hours in 2003. Gordon is grateful to Raisco Ltd, structural steel company, where he works and has supported him with flexible working to enable him to train for 20 hours every week. He regularly rides with Darlington Cycle club, who have helped with his training.

There will be over 200 cyclists on the start line on 24th August and Gordon hopes to be up there with the top guys, many from over seas.
