With a forecast cold snap almost upon us and the unpredictable British weather in general, it’s never too early to get a head start on your cars winter maintenance. Whether you have a brand-new modern car or a most beloved classic car, winter checks are crucial for the health and longevity of any vehicle. Items that should be taken into consideration:
Battery – Throughout the winter months your cars battery is put under additional strain due to the increased usage of electrics. Colder temperatures reduce a battery’s performance, so it is important to make sure it is in good condition.
Lights – With reduced visibility during bad weather, your lights (bulbs, reflectors & lenses) should be clean and working correctly for the safety of yourself and other road users.
Coolant – During the year a lot of people top up with water only, but your coolant should be a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water. Over diluted coolant can freeze, causing your engine to overheat and leaving you with a hefty repair bill.
Tyres – It is essential that your tyres are in good condition as they are vital to your braking and steering. The pressures need to be set to the manufacturer’s specifications, so they perform as they should. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, driving with dangerous or defective tyres risks a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre. So, four illegal tyres could cost you a fine of up to £10,000 and 12 penalty points!!
Wiper Blades/Washers – Wiper blades should be checked for tears or deterioration and replaced when necessary to ensure an unobstructed road view. Topping up your washers with screenwash helps to avoid your washer fluid freezing and helps to clean your windscreen.
Oil – Colder temperatures mean oil takes longer to reach optimum efficiency. It is vitally important that the correct levels are maintained so your cars performance is not affected.
