A PLASTICS firm which has ambitions to export to Australia has recruited its first apprentice to support its growing business.
Lewis Scarr has started his career at Primex Plastics, at Aycliffe Business Park, by taking a Commercial Business Apprenticeship with the North East Chamber of Commerce.
The 18-year-old is applying his knowledge to office administration, finance, customer services and producing daily production reports. His appointment comes as National Apprenticeship Week 2016 is celebrated this week.
Gary Clement, manufacturing manager at Primex Plastics said: “We’re an expanding business and it needs skilled young people to support its development. I was pleased at how well Lewis interviewed and presented himself, and has settled into the company. Primex is an international company and can offer a range of career opportunities.”
Lewis said: “I really value the apprenticeship I have with Primex as I’ve the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time. I’ve particularly enjoyed working in all the departments of the company which has given me a broad based understanding of the workings of a manufacturing business.”
Simon Goon, managing director of Business Durham, the economic development company for County Durham, said:  “Just about everything we touch is derived from some form of plastic. Primex Plastics is important in sustaining the manufacturing economy, and by investing in apprenticeships it is helping to improve skills in Newton Aycliffe.”
Established in Newton Aycliffe in 1998, Primex has been steadily growing its markets within the UK, Scandinavia and  Europe. Future projects will involve exporting to Australia. Primex  is a premier manufacture of quality, custom extruded plastic sheet for the leisure, industrial, automotive, packaging and construction sectors.
It is part of PRIMEX Plastics Corporation, which is one of the leading manufacturers of thermoplastic sheet in the United States. It was founded by Dr John J Farber, founder and Chairman of ICC Industries Inc, owner of Primex Plastics Corporation
