To demonstrate their unity with and support for the people of Ukraine, Great Aycliffe Town Councillors, together with staff, church officials and members of the public, gathered at St Clare’s Church on Tuesday 15 March for a brief ceremony, prayers for peace, and to raise the flag of Ukraine, purchased by the Town Council.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor of Great Aycliffe, Councillor Mrs Sandra Haigh, said, “The Town Council shares the shock and sadness felt by people all around the world at the current situation in Ukraine and our thoughts are very much with the Ukrainian people, as well as their family and friends living in different countries.
We fly the flag today as a gesture of our strong solidarity with, and support for, Ukraine and the bravery of its people.”
A further Ukraine flag is also being flown from the flagpole at Great Aycliffe Town Council Offices on School Aycliffe Lane, Newton Aycliffe.
