Earlier this month, fourteen Year 4 pupils from Stephenson Way Academy unleashed their inner adventurer as they travelled to Dukeshouse Wood for a residential experience. The children spent three days at the activity centre, which is on the outskirts of Hexham, learning new skills alongside over 100 pupils from six other schools in the Tudhoe Learning Trust.
During their time away pupils participated in a whole host of activities including, abseiling, Jacob’s ladder, laser tag, obstacle courses, den building, survival skills and archery. Their night times were filled with hot chocolate, marshmallows and singing songs around the campfire and culminated with a disco on the final evening. Both centre and school staff were impressed with how the children challenged themselves, learnt new skills, developed their ability to work as a team, encouraged and supported each other and made new friends from other schools.
For many it was the first time they had been away from their families, and they embraced the jobs that helped them to look after themselves too, such as making their own beds and packing etc. Throughout their time away, the children behaved impeccably and were a credit to their parents and their school, though they were thoroughly worn out by the time they arrived home!
