St John’s School in Bishop Auckland has announced the opening of a Rugby Academy which will launch in September 2013. This exciting new venture will enable talented athletes to combine elite rugby performance with academic study.

The Rugby Academy is designed to work alongside a student’s academic courses, enabling them to develop their rugby skills so that they may perform at the highest level. It will offer a specialised coaching system which will incorporate strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, 1 to 1 coaching and tactical analysis over the 2 year course.

The academy will also help Sports students gain a detailed insight into the world of professional athletes, as well as further enhancing their subject knowledge.

Students will have the option of selecting A-Level Physical Education or BTEC National Level 3 Sport, along with a Community Sports Leadership Award and an RFU coaching qualification.

Students receive 11 hours coaching each week, incorporating a strength and conditioning programme, nutritional structures and a student mentor programme.

The team will have regular fixtures against local Colleges each Wednesday afternoon and will also be involved in cup fixtures. We also hope to incorporate an overseas tour at the end of the season which will further develop the students’ technical and tactical prowess in the sport.

If you are interested in joining the Rugby Academy or would like further information please contact Mr Steve Smith, PE teacher, at St John’s  on 01388 603246.
