Sedgefield entered 2 teams in the City of Manchester Water Polo Festival on Saturday 24th June. The ‘Born 2005 and younger’ team were full of confidence after recent tournaments. Tough match to start against Bridgefield  with Sedgefield running out winners after a hard fought match.  Matches after that gave the young team the opportunity to demonstrate why their training  is so important.  Excellent fitness and team work ensured high scoring matches and ensured the team conceded a low number of goals.

Sedgefield were beaten in the semi-final by tournament winners Devonport who had a little too much strength across the whole team.  That left the Bronze Medal match against NE rivals Rotherham, who we had beaten at home in the recent development competition.  Again the results went Sedgefield’s way with an impressive victory to take the medal place. Vicky Alderson, Club Secretary, commented on the commitment and dedication of the team.   “Players ranged in age from 8-12 years and it was excellent to see how they worked together in and out of the pool as a team regardless of their age differences.  They remained focused throughout the entire day and achieved a well-deserved bronze medal.  Well done to all players, coaches and parents!” The ‘Born 2003 and younger team’ travelled with the expectation of putting in a good performance.  The opening 2 matches both went Sedgefield’s way.

Then things started to go awry and the results didn’t go how the team expected, meaning the team did not qualify for medal positions.  Coach Richard Cousins said ‘tough matches for all those involved but with a lot of positives to take away. It may not have been what the team wanted but nobody can fault the teams efforts’.
