A former Newton Aycliffe man who donated his bone marrow and saved a stranger’s life is in training for the Great North Run.
Trevor Tinkler, whose family still lives in the town, including his 87-year-old mother, Freda, donated his bone marrow through the Anthony Nolan Trust. The recipient took the unusual step of seeking his donor’s details and he and his wife have since become great friends of Trevor and his wife, Lauren.
The recipient, Mike Felton from Leicestershire, will be travelling to Newcastle to watch Trevor, a grandfather, undertake the most famous half marathon in the world.
It isn’t the first time that Trevor has raised money for the charity and has also been sponsored when undertaking cycle rides and outdoor swimming. Every penny helps the charity, which helps people suffering from leukaemia by running a register of bone marrow donors and matching them to the needs of sufferers.
Trevor, who is very modest about his donation and his fundraising is hoping to raise over £2000. He has an on-line fundraising page for anyone to donate. It can be found at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/trevor-tinkler
