Andrew Sedgwick Aycliffe Tri club coach decided this year to take on a new challenge, entering the International Tour ta’ Malta, a four day bike race held on this beautiful island. Being a triathlete and a bike team member, it was only natural that one day he would take his cycling passion further. It seemed that completing the challenging Alpe d’Huez Triathlon some years ago wasn’t enough. (That particular race is unique because during course of the bike race, the triathletes ride the 3 mountain passes included in the Tour de France.)
Supported by Aycliffe Tri club members Michelle Scott and Dan Halladay, the team set off for warmer climates in the sunny Mediterranean for a week. (But racing wasn’t just the focus of the trip. For Michelle and Dan, when their support services weren’t needed, they were training, preparing themselves for this year’s Brecca Run/Swim race, held in the Lake District.) Against some very tough opposition containing semi-pro cyclists from around Europe, Andrew was able to maintain and finish in an amazing 9th place overall. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but not one to sit on his laurels, he’ll be off to race in the Tour of Northumberland two stage race on the 5th, 6th of April.
