Students at Woodham Academy have recently been benefitting from a range of new musical instruments.
The music department received a grant from the Education Funding Agency in order to purchase ukuleles and djembes for full classes to further enhance the musical provision in the school.
Year 7 and 8 students worked over a period of 6 weeks to rehearse as part of a class orchestra with students selecting their chosen instrument. Students had to learn to play the instrument, learn their part and develop essential skills such as team work and listening. Most of all, students were able to develop their ensemble skills as they performed in a group of up to 30 students. Music teacher, Mrs Taylor, commented “The purchase of these new instruments has really enhanced the music provision at the school. Students are able to select instruments of their choice, and work on something which interests and engages them. Some students have actually gone and purchased their own ukuleles! The final performance was very impressive, with all students performing together to a high standard. We look forward to seeing students perform at our annual Summer Concert on Thursday 14th July at 7pm, tickets are available now. ”
