A County Durham school is to have its crumbling buildings replaced by a new building on one site following a decision made by Durham County Council cabinet on 6 April 2022.
Students from Greenfield Community College will benefit from an amazing new learning environment designed to build on the schools legacy; creating a space where students feel valued, want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions. The school which serves Newton Aycliffe and Shildon has been subject to uncertainty and welcomes the positive investment in its future by politicians.
Mr Peter Bergg, Chair of the Aycliffe and Shildon Schools Trust (ASSET), said, “this represents a once in a generation opportunity to give our students and their families the modern facilities and investment they deserve. Governors and trustees are working hard to ensure all stakeholders have a powerful influence in shaping the new provision.”
Mr David Priestley, Headteacher at Greenfield, said, “generations of children have thrived from experiencing the unique approach of this small, family-based school. Their stories are caught up in our old buildings and although these will be demolished this is to allow us to offer a state of the art facility to support many more amazing life stories in the future.”
In anticipation of this decision, the school has seen an increase in the numbers of families wanting their children to take up places. Headteacher, David Priestley says “it is always good to be popular and we will always try to welcome all those who want to work with us, but Greenfield has always been, and will remain a small school where everyone is known.”
Greenfield is committed to creating a self-improving culture of learning. Providing an inclusive curriculum, promoting a strong student voice and a can-do attitude, working together to realise an outstanding learning experience for all young people. The approach enables the highly experienced and expert staff to provide a calm, caring and nurturing environment, where every student is valued, supported and treated as an individual.
