Durham Corinthians 1 v Newton Aycliffe Youth Seniors 3
Another cup quarter final for the seniors. The game started and Durham took the lead inside of three minutes after a mix up at the back. Then Aycliffe started to dominate across the midfield and a nice bit of play, starting with a ball out from the back by James in goal, into the defence, along the back line and on into midfield. A chipped ball was chested down by Callum Thomson for Steven Dawson to volley home. Durham started to drop deeper allowing the lads more time on the ball. Then Jack Mortimer set up Ryan Peart to poke home and put us in front. At the other end, James produced a good save to keep us in front at the break. The game was settled when Jack was fouled in the box and he stepped up to slot home the penalty. Not our best game, but an important result to break the spell of losing quarter finals. Next three games see the Seniors back to league action, looking to close the gap on the teams at the top (due to the cup runs we are 8 and 7 games behind the top two). If Aycliffe win their games in hand, they go 10 points clear at the top, but still a lot of football to be played in the coming months. Mom Ryan Peart.
Darlington RA Women 5 v Newton Aycliffe Youth Women 4
Not the result Aycliffe wanted. Despite the women taking the lead, when Katie was played in by Annabelle, Darlington replied immediately. Aycliffe again took the lead, Katie was taken down in the box, Annabelle stepped up and converted the penalty. Darlington replied 2-2, and for the first time they took the lead 3-2. Play was then stopped for a serious injury to Jess, who was subsequently taken to hospital, we all wish her a speedy recovery.
Second half and Aycliffe switched off allowing Darlington to get a 4th and then a 5th. A few changes and we were back in it, Annabelle struck a free kick leaving the keeper no chance, 5-3. Katie was then unlucky when she hit the post. Katie then turned provider, feeding in Kate to get her first of the game, 5-4. Unfortunately, although finishing the better team, we just ran out of time. Player of the match was a unanimous decision for Jess, her game was brought to an end in the first half through a nasty injury.
