School Aycliffe’s Scarlet Dunn made a great start to competitive karting by finishing 5th at Rowrah kart circuit in Cumbria on Sunday.

Scarlet was supported by her Mam Amanda (Multiple British single seater car racing Champion – formerly known as Amanda Whitaker), Grandad Ron Whitaker and mechanic Rob Storey.

It was her first time to the circuit – and the first time the team had been there since Amanda raced there 30 years ago! The weather conditions throughout gradually worsened but it didn’t faze Scarlet and she did an amazing job getting to grips with the circuit and the conditions.

Competing in the Bambino class, which is decided on best lap times rather than wheel to wheel racing, she moved from 8th place in the heats to finish 5th place in the final.

“She really enjoyed herself and was keen to get back on the track” said Mam. “She was very smooth and once she got used to the wet track she made no mistakes and kept on going faster! In every session Scarlet’s fastest lap was on the last lap”.

They hope to compete again at the next round in September.
