The UTC’s first Student and Parent event took place at the Xcel Centre on Wednesday afternoon, attended by families and young people interested in joining in September next year.  They were able to talk to the Founding Members of the UTC, Hitachi, Gestamp Tallent and the University of Sunderland to find out how they are supporting the new technical school and the career opportunities open to them in the future.
Tom Dower, Principal of the UTC, gave an introductory presentation and commented afterwards; ‘I was delighted to meet so many young people who are excited about the world of STEM, engineering and manufacturing.  I continue to be very impressed by the thought that they are putting into their future careers; my job is to give them the academic and technical education which will set them up for their future.  Our strong links with a wide range of companies mean that our students will understand the world of work and develop the skills which employers are looking for.  Applications are going very well and I can’t wait to welcome our first students in September.
Students were also able to meet ERIC, the humanoid robot, meet apprentices from Hydram and take part in a number of activities.  The UTC is accepting applications for Year 10 and Year 12 next year with a first deadline of 1st December.
