It will come as no surprise to people who know me that I am a great supporter of those who would like to set up business in our great town. I was therefore delighted as Great Aycliffe Town Mayor to be invited to attend an open day at one of our newer businesses to join us in our family of factories.
Peikko LTD is a hugely successful international building products producer who have had huge success in the UK and abroad since its formation in Finland. It may not be a household name just yet, but the company operates in 34 countries and has more than 2000 employees worldwide. Peikko products are used in the construction of high-rise buildings and those where it is necessary to join and strengthen concrete assemblies to give buildings strength, with some Peikko products being used in the world-famous Shard building in London and in many of the huge windmills which we see.
Peikko managing director, John Metcalfe, greeted us at the door and we were introduced to Topi Paananen, Chief Executive Officer, and son of the founder who began the company in 1965. Over a coffee we were informed of the company’s wish to expand, although they have only been in Newton Aycliffe since Christmas. John and Topi then escorted the Mayor and Mayoress on a tour of the facility explaining manufacturing techniques and aspirations. We were especially impressed with the use of robots in the production line and the enthusiasm of the whole workforce. Overall it was a pleasant and productive day.
Knowing that enterprising businesses wish to become part of the Newton Aycliffe story gives me great faith in the future for our town and our children.
Cllr Ken & Elaine Robson, Mayor and Mayoress of Great Aycliffe
