MP Congratulates Newton News Founder on M.B.E

Phil Wilson MP visited Newton News founder Syd Howarth to congratulate him on being awarded an M.B.E. for his services to the community.
Having moved to Newton Aycliffe in 1963 it wasn’t long before Syd’s printing business (the first in the town) took over the local magazine and eventually gave the town its own newspaper, free to every household. Which people across Newton Aycliffe all still enjoy today.
Syd however, has done much more than provide Newton Aycliffe with its very own newspaper. A Rotarian for over 33 years, he has led numerous community projects across the town. Most notably out of these are the Nature Park behind Gestamp, the War Memorial outside of St. Clare’s Church, and the refurbishment of the welcome sign, benches and the Blue Bridge.
In congratulating Syd, Phil Wilson said “It is great to see such a fantastic and dedicated man rewarded for his services to the local community. I am very pleased Syd is receiving recognition for all the hard work and time he has put into both the Newton News and community projects across the town.”
Speaking with Syd’s sons, it was obvious to Mr Wilson that Newton Press is more than just a business. They told Phil “we are all extremely proud of all that our dad has done and achieved over the years, he is a true gentleman and inspiration to all the family.”
Commenting Mr Wilson said “it is clear that family and community are at the heart of the Newton News and Newton Press.”
Overwhelmed by the congratulations and support he has received, Syd said “One of my guiding principles has been to give something back to the community which gave me, my family and my employees a living. I love my town and support it fully in every way possible. The Newton News has given residents a voice, and by reflecting public opinion in its columns has actively influenced decision making in our locality.”
