Over the last few weeks, three year 8 pupils from the Greenfield Community College Sunnydale Campus in Shildon, have been taking part in the GlaxoSmithKline Germ Control Challenge 2015. Its aim is to encourage wider thinking about disease and infection control.
Their ideas about bacterial transfer through washing up sponges has managed to get them into the final twenty from a national field of over 150 other teams.
Abigail Charlton, Emma Lee and Mason Milburn are hoping their current investigation will see them through to the final six which will involve a trip to the National Science Museum in London where they will present their findings and be given a VIP tour.
Their GSK germ squad mentor seemed encouraged by their enthusiasm and early results yesterday saying their work was on a par with older students from other schools in the same competition. Science teacher Mr Derek McKee-Brown says “It’s great that the students are showing such a key interest in an area that’s very topical at the moment. I’m hoping these three talented young scientists get a taste for the subject early and go on to study it further later in their academic careers.”
