The Huntsman were back in action last Sunday at home to Willington Cottles, following the 6-0 victory against the same side a week earlier. Neil Dodds was forced into two changes from that side; as Callum Farley and Mike Sproates were recalled for the absent Connor Halford and Lee Redpath.
It appeared as though the home side were going to pick up where they left off the previous week, as they pressed high early on. That pressure was rewarded when a Cottles’ clearance was collected by Ryan Mercer, who danced past three, before slipping in Cal Farley to drill low into the opposition net.
The Cottles’ response was immediate however, as a long defensive clearance allowed Callum Smith a free run at goal, and the striker made no mistake in dispatching the opportunity.
The home side really struggled to get to grips with the game following that, and it appeared as though the first half would end in a stalemate. However, Mike Sproates broke quickly down the right-hand side and his attempt at goal was met by the head of his brother Shaun to restore the home side’s advantage.
Two soon became three, as another great piece of work from Mercer found Shaun in a wide area. He cut inside, and his square ball was met by strike partner Reed Molloy who lashed home to continue his great goal scoring run and give the home side a flattering 3-1 half time lead.
The second half was a none event, with only a smattering of low key chances Huntsman chances, and Man Of The Match Nathan Wintour in goal equal to anything that Cottles had to offer. The 3-1 victory leaves The Huntsman top of the league on goal difference ahead of rivals Coundon.
Next up for The Huntsman is an away tie against Willington Queen’s Head this Sunday in the 2nd Division League Cup.
