Last week was an exciting week at Sugar Hill Primary as children working in school and those working at home prepared their Covid19 time capsules and buried them. The project was planned so the children were involved in thinking about how the pandemic has impacted on family life and as a record of ‘history in the making!’ The capsules include items that we use to keep us safe – masks and hand sanitiser and the children’s thoughts and feelings about Covid19.

Year 4 pupil, Ella Beadle, captured her thoughts in the following words – ‘Since the 23rd of March 2020, when the first lockdown started, it has been very hard for all of us. Everyone has new rules to follow, you have to wear a mask when going out and into shops, we have to wash our hands regularly and sanitise them when we touch things. There is also a two-metre distance rule to follow to help us stay safe. We haven’t been able to go out or see our family or friends. It has made me very sad, especially with my birthday being next month and I can’t celebrate with anyone other than with people that live in my house or in my bubble. Sometimes I don’t want to leave the house in case I catch Covid. It has made me feel scared and I would like to be able to go out and feel safe. Activities have helped us keep safe during this very difficult time. My favourite activity I did was a clay model handprint plaque so we can show my children when I have them. Everything has changed because of this virus but it has taught me to be thankful for everything and everyone in my life. I would love things to go back to normal, but I don’t know when this will be. Stay safe everyone’. Ellas’s mam has spoken to Mrs Legge, Deputy Head Teacher, saying how proud she is of Ella completing this work and how much fun they had doing it together. They are both looking forward to seeing her writing printed in the Newton News! Super work Ella!

Sugar Hill staff would like to thank parents and carers for all their support with this project. Time capsules all over Newton Aycliffe will be unearthed at some point in the future and this will be exciting for all the children and families who have been involved.
