Newton Aycliffe Guide, Abi Barnett, is embarking on a new adventure this week – 3 months volunteering at “Our Chalet” in the mountains of Switzerland.
It is an International Guiding Centre with adventures for girls from around the world. Abi is no stranger to volunteering as she was a Gamesmaker during the Paralympics in London 4 years ago and recently was awarded the Sir Jack Petchey Volunteer award in London for her contribution to Guiding in the city. This involved her leading Guiding sessions for sick children at Great Ormond Street Hospital as well as a local Guiding unit at St Pancras.
Locally Abi has been involved with Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Sections across the county, leading activities, taking part in hill walking, leaders course and updating the Guiding web site. She has promised to bring back chocolate fro her trip!
More information on Guiding can be found at: www.girlguiding.org.uk
Abi is funding the flights and travel costs herself, receiving free board and lodgings whilst volunteering.
