A North East restaurant chain is hitting the starting blocks to provide fuel for the world’s most popular half marathon.

From Friday, September 14 to Sunday, September 16, Fratello’s Italian restaurants at Jesmond and Newcastle International Airport will be offering a special set menu, designed specifically for runners and spectators of this year’s Bupa Great North Run.

The menu, which has been carefully crafted by the restaurants’ expert chefs, uses ingredients renowned for their health benefits and low fat content, as well as those proven to boost energy and endurance.

It offers a choice of three starters, including calamari with lemon dip, garlic mushroom bruschetta and a caprese salad with rocket pesto, which is enriched with vitamin c to help boost the immune system.

The main course options, including supreme of chicken, smoked salmon and sirloin steak all come with a choice of potatoes to help runners meet the recommended intake of up to 65 per cent of calories through good carbohydrates*, with a pasta option also on offer for those who’d prefer to carbo-load without the spuds.

In line with the recommendation that an additional 25 to 30 per cent of daily calories should come from fat*, Fratello’s Great North Run menu also includes a choice of four desserts, aptly titled “go on, you deserve it.”  This includes chocolate brownie, tiramisu, cheesecake and a selection of ice creams or sorbets.

Dan Humphries, Marketing Manager for Fratello’s said: “Meat, fish, potatoes and pasta are popular choices for those in training for a race like the Great North Run and we wanted to ensure that runners could enjoy all of the health benefits in a tasty, easy and affordable way.”

The Great North Run menu will be available at Fratello’s adjoining the Holiday Inn hotel, Jesmond and in the DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle International Airport hotel during regular opening hours across the Great North Run weekend, priced at £20 per person.
