Durham County Council met this week to agree plans to revitalise markets in the County. This follows a study last year which recognised markets need help to thrive. The Council propose to support and encourage markets which sounds like good news, but it does not apply to Newton Aycliffe as our market is run by the traders themselves under the auspices of our Town Council.

Newton News wrote to Neil Foster, Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development at Durham County Council suggesting Newton Aycliffe should have a fair share of any money being spent to help markets in the county.

County Council Response:

Cllr Neil Foster, Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development at Durham County Council said: “We are looking at ways to develop and revitalise markets in County Durham in order to help them overcome the current economic pressures they face.

“We are keen to work with and support all markets in the county as we recognise that they all play a vital role in our local town centre economies.

“The principles in our strategy can clearly be applied to all markets and we hope to have the opportunity to work with other market operators to help bring about wider improvements.”
