Science Ambassadors, from Years 9, 10 and 11 at Woodham Academy, represented the school at ‘Celebrate Science’ during the half term holiday. ‘Celebrate Science’ is a public event held every year by Durham University for families to get hands on with science.
The students had to design and carry out an experiment suitable for children of all ages, and prepare scientific posters ahead of the event. They then presented their activity and ideas to the visiting children and their parents, as well as university staff and students. During the morning, they carried out the Skittles Diffusion practical with approximately 150 children aged from 2-14. The students then spent the afternoon exploring the other stalls, talking to scientists from a range of backgrounds and trying out activities ranging from psychological experiments to space themed VR and medieval medicine to nanobot races. They modelled all of the Woodham values at all times and were a credit to the school.
Their efforts were recognised by Dr Pete Edwards, from the Science Engagement Team at Durham University, who said, “We had wonderful feedback from many of our visitors and Durham University staff who chatted with the students and were very impressed with their enthusiasm and knowledge! It is fair to say they had a big impact on our visitors.”
A huge thank you and well done to Erin, Gwyneth, Jack, Lily and Macey of the Woodham Academy Science Ambassadors.
