Newton Aycliffe’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, had an excellent four wicket victory at home to near neighbours Shildon 1st XI in the NYSD second division to take their unbeaten run to four games. After being asked to bat first, the visitors were bowled out for 163 after 49.2 overs thanks to a season’s best performance by acting skipper James Layfield-Carroll who took 4 for 31 and he was supported well by both Leo Mercy (3 for 37) and Matty Greaves (1 for 27). In reply, Aycliffe got off to a bad start losing two quick wickets with only 11 runs on the board. Opener Leon Patel (19 off 38 balls) and Joe Teasdale (17 off 19 balls) helped repair the damage and got their side to 81 for 4. Chris Palmer (sponsored by Vanila Design & Print) then took over and batted superbly to take his side to victory with an unbeaten 52 from 75 balls and he received solid support from both Terence Smit (31 off 33 balls) and Owen Smith (20 not out off 9 balls) as Aycliffe crossed the winning line with a huge 19.2 overs in hand. The club’s 2nd XI were disappointingly defeated away at Bedale 2nd XI by seven wickets in the NYSD 4th division. Aycliffe were asked to bat first and were bowled out for just 115 after 31.2 overs with only Tom Dearden (sponsored by Kevin Burton), who top scored with 35 runs, Ramzan Hussain (26 runs), Will Dearden (12 runs) and Nathan Stokeld (11 runs) reaching double figures. In reply, the home side eased to a comfortable victory after 27.1 overs, despite a couple of wickets from Tom Dearden and a wicket from captain Jimmy Newton.
The club’s U17’s team were beaten for the first time in the league this season going down by 20 runs at home to top of the table Richmond in the NYSD Junior League. The visitors were asked to bat first and scored 99 for 8 in their 20 overs with Leo Stout and Jai Sander both bowling well for Aycliffe and taking two wickets apiece. In reply, Aycliffe were restricted to 79 for 9 from their 20 overs with only Adam Shaw (24 off 19 balls), Will Dearden (13 off 20 balls) and Tom Dearden (10 off 17 balls) putting up much resistance against the very lively Richmond bowling attack.
The club’s U13’s team put in a superb performance to win away at Darlington by six wickets in the NYACC League. The home side chose to bat first and scored a challenging 103 for 5 from their allotted 20 overs with Aycliffe’s debutant Freddie Lawler the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 10 from his three overs. In reply, openers Joey Hayman (31 retired off 42 balls) and captain Trent Telford (21 off 26 balls) got Aycliffe off to an excellent start. However, the visitors lost four wickets in quick succession and it was left to Tom Norman (13 not out off 16 balls) to keep his cool and help see his side safely over the line on 104 for 4 with just five balls of the innings remaining.
The U11’s Girls were beaten at home by 35 runs against Sedgefield in the Durham league despite some good performance’s with the ball from both Annabelle Duggan, who took two wickets for just two runs, and Lydia Myers who only gave away two runs during her spell.
