It has been an extraordinary year for Greenfield Community College. In January the successful Newton Aycliffe School expanded to include Sunnydale School in Shildon, and there were double GCSE celebrations when the results were announced in August. Greenfield staff were delighted that the first set of results as an expanded school revealed high levels of achievement and great progress.
The college results were above the national average in English at both C+ grades and A/A*; rapidly improving in Maths and ICT, outstanding in MFL and Art and, in fact, strong in all subjects.
The cohort of students at the Newton Aycliffe campus celebrated their impressive achievement of 62% 5 A*-C including English and Maths. Special congratulations go to Katie Blenkinsopp, Maisie Clark, Holly Hardy, Stewart McCaffrey and Leonie Wong who each achieved 10 or more A/A* grades. Across the whole school Greenfield students achieved a staggering 342 A/A* grades, with almost half the cohort achieving at least one top grade.
The headline figure of 55% 5A*-C including English and Maths is inspiring the young people of the college to believe in their futures.
David Priestley, Executive Headteacher, said, “Governors and staff are delighted to celebrate such strong results on both campuses in our first year as an expanded school. These results will allow our students to move into the next phase of their lives and we wish them every success. Everyone at both sites has worked very hard to create a cohesive team in a very short space of time in order to enhance the learning experiences of all students”
2014/15 has been extraordinary not only because of the exam successes, but also because of the breadth of experiences that Greenfield has provided for the young people of Aycliffe and Shildon. Students were invited to speak at regional and national conferences to share best practice in teaching and learning.
The school hosted an international teaching and learning symposium with visitors from around the world. Students also had the chance to participate in a huge range of sporting, creative, cultural and wider educational opportunities. The year was rounded off with an incredible and highly praised production of Les Miserables.
2015/16 promises to be even more exciting at Greenfield with lots of educational visits and residential opportunities scheduled, the Anne Frank Exhibition , sporting opportunities, STEM club, performing arts performances, and the life changing World Challenge trip to Morocco coming up in the summer term.
