On Tuesday 15th July four Year 9 students from Woodham Academy visited Durham University as part of the Dux Award Scheme 2014. This is the 2nd year that Woodham Academy has been involved in the scheme, which is organised through the Department for Education. The aim is to raise aspiration of students and to provide students, who have the potential to progress onto higher education, the opportunity to attend and discover what university life is like. The students, who were nominated by their Head of Year, started the day with a welcome talk from the Future Scholar Award Scheme Directors at Durham. Students then participated in a variety of subject taster sessions and also had the opportunity to look around the University and talk with undergraduate students.
Ruby Knowles commented “I enjoyed the day. It ws very interactive and informative. It made me realsie that I definitely want to go to university and would consider Durham as an option”.
This is one of many opportunities for students at Woodham Academy to find out about higher education and opportunities post 16. Mrs McGinnety who is the lead teacher for Careers Education, Information and Guidance commented “During the last academic year all students left the academy entering into employment, education or training. Many of them opt to follow higher level qualifications. This is something that we are really proud of and a testament to all the hard work that goes into supporting our young people”.
