At the Annual Meeting held on Wednesday 11th May, Councillor Jed Hillary was appointed Mayor of Great Aycliffe and Chairman of the Council. Jed succeeded Mary Dalton who completed her fourth year of office at the age of 90.
Jed, who also serves as a County Councillor, thanked everyone for placing their confidence in him and pledged to do his duty as Mayor to the best of his ability.
Each Mayor raises money during their year of office for charity and Jed’s choice as a former Army regular was the needy past members of the Rifles Regiment. More locally he will help two community centres who have taken responsibility of running their centres themselves – Aycliffe Village and Newton Aycliffe Youth & Community Centre.
Michael Dalton was elected Deputy Mayor, hoping to be elected Mayor next year for the second time. Will he be trying to beat his Mother’s record? Michael is a member of Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club and a Trustee of the Pioneering Care Centre. A full report of the Annual Meeting will be published in next week’s issue.
