During December a group of 23 Greenfield Students attended a Poetry Workshop run by Julie Ashmore at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College. The students had a real taste of a Sixth Form lesson whilst also having the opportunity to develop their poetry skills to a higher level in preparation for their GCSE exams in the summer. Mrs Goodfellow, Subject Lead for English, commented on how well the students engaged with the session and said ‘the session really seemed to boost their confidence, the students seemed more willing to challenge each other and to make their own points without seeking reassurance first’.
The session provided food for thought for the students, not just in poetry but when thinking about their futures. One student said ‘I really want to do Literature at College now, but I was set on doing the Sciences, I will have to have a real think about it now.’ The students would certainly be more than welcome at the college after impressing Mrs Ashmore who said that she ‘hoped to see them at Bridging Week’. The students really were a credit to themselves and the school.
