Have you ever caught yourself gazing at the stars or wondering what goes on amongst the planets in space?  You’re not the only one, as astronomy has become a hot topic more recently surrounding the discovery of yet more plants and planned trips to space becoming a reality.
One school recognising the interest in astrophysics is Woodham Academy which is introducing the option to study Astronomy as part of its More Able Academy.
The school has identified that an increasing number of students are focussing their attention on science and will now offer its students the chance to study the topic alongside their other GCSEs.
Woodham’s More Able Academy gives students the opportunity to stretch and challenge all aspects of learning, raising achievement and increasing aspirations while obtaining further qualifications.
Andrew Bell, deputy headteacher said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity for all the students involved, providing a stimulating programme of weekly and one-off activities.’
The course will begin in November, starting with an educational visit to Wynyard Observatory where students can expect to learn how to use a variety of telescopes and understand the theory behind the formation of stars and planets.
Mr Raitt, course leader explained how the subject will enrich students’ learning.
Mr Raitt, said: ‘We have also invited Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a respected Astrophysicist from the University of Cambridge, to visit our students and deliver workshops so that they experience the world from a different perspective.  Classes will be varied and challenging which is exactly what our students enjoy.’
Me Bell concluded, ‘We are thrilled to offer Astronomy at Woodham Academy, watch this space.’
