On Wednesday 9th November, eight Year 10 BTEC Sport students from Woodham Academy were selected to assist with the running of a primary school indoor athletics event. The event was run by ‘Go Well’, who are organisers of school sports competitions and games.
A number of local primary schools entered the indoor athletics event at the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, ready for a fun day of friendly competition. Woodham’s sports leaders were given the role of demonstrating each event to the primary school students, followed by officiating and recording results.
Mr Patterson, from Woodham Academy, said “I was really proud of how engaging and professional our Year 10 students were. They all really enjoyed the day and experienced using many of the leadership skills they have learnt in their PE and BTEC lessons. They are excellent role models, and the experience will benefit them while at Woodham and beyond.”
Paul Donaghy (Go Well – Competition and School Games Organiser) added: “Thank you to the Sports leaders, they were fantastic. Great with the primary pupils, demonstrating the running races and recording the field events.”
The Indoor Athletics event is yet another opportunity taken by the sports leaders, adding to previous events for football, tag rugby and dodgeball. They continue to build a range of experiences and support to the wider community.
