Year 6 pupils at Aycliffe Village Primary had many reasons to celebrate in their last few weeks of primary school. They recently raised £238 through an Enterprise Project they organised and ran at school. The money was used to buy new books for the school library, each specially chosen by the pupils and with a message inside the front cover from the child who chose it.

The money was also used to support the outside gardening project Year 6 helped lead this year and will cover costs for an information board about trees in the school ground which all classes will be contributing to in September.

Year 6 also had excellent SATs results this year; they were above national averages in all subjects and showed a significant improvement for the school from results in 2017, with Reading results increasing by 11%, Maths results increasing by 26% and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling increasing by 23%. Head Teacher, Helen Sutherland, who joined the school in January, said, “I am the first to say SATs results are not the ‘be all and end all’ and I strongly believe there is so much more to a good education than outcomes in SATs. However, I also firmly believe that we, as a school, have a duty to support children to achieve academically to the best of their abilities, as this will set them up well for their future lives. We are thrilled with the way our Year 6 pupils have risen to the challenges of their final year at primary school and congratulate them all on progress they have made.”

Year 6 pupils led an emotional leavers assembly during their last week. This was watched by members of their families and the whole school. It featured songs from ‘The Greatest Showman’ and poems the children had written about each other. Prior to the assembly, family members had been invited into school to enjoy a school lunch together and then had a ‘parents versus children’ game of rounders! The pupils won!
