The CrossFit Games are the world’s premier test to find the ‘Fittest on Earth’ and, on Friday 10th June, local CrossFit athlete and coach at CrossFit All Out, Vicki Finn Smith (aged 38) received the confirmation to say she had qualified for the games. Vicki made the decision back in 2018 to quit full time work to focus on CrossFit. Since then she has trained relentlessly, making sacrifices to push for her dream goal; to qualify for The CrossFit games.
The process to qualify was a prolonged one, starting in February with the first round, ‘The Open’ where she placed 67th in the world for her age category (ages 35-39) out of 14,400 individuals. She then moved on to the Quarterfinals, tackling 5 tough workouts, finishing in 12th place worldwide out of 1,400 other women. This earned her a spot in the Women’s 35-39 Online Age Group Semi-finals, amongst 30 others in the world. Over the weekend 27-29th May, 6 workouts were released, and Vicki had to complete 2 a day at her gym CrossFit All Out. Many members came down to support her over this weekend, cheering her on and pushing her through each WOD. On the final day of Semi-finals, the gym erupted when Vicki hit a 94kg clean and jerk, which sent her through to The CrossFit Games.
Vicki said, “Since starting CrossFit at All Out 6 years ago, I have been in love with the sport. From watching regionals back in 2016 it started the fire inside and from there built on the dream of getting to the Games. In 2018 I made the decision to quit work full time and dedicate more time to CrossFit. I found ways to support myself by setting up my own business and made the transition into coaching at the box. Since then I’ve dedicated myself working relentlessly on my skills, strength and weaknesses. Chipping away each year in the Open and progressing. I’ve sacrificed time with family and friends to get to this point.
There are no shortcuts, only hard work and patience. Knowing eventually all of this will pay off. Dreams do come true. Thank you to the absolute unreal support from CrossFit All Out throughout, but particularly during the Semi-finals workouts, with everyone behind me and shouting me along! Tez Anderson who’s spurred me along since joining All Out!
A massive thanks to the 2 guys in my corner, my coach Facundo Etchecolatz and husband Stewart Smith, my number one fan and always pushing me, keeping me on track and sacrifices time to do so.
The start of 2022 has been a tough one and I dedicate this to the strongest woman I know, my mum Gillian and her husband Phil who passed away in January.”
CrossFit All Out owners, Vikki and Terry Anderson, said, “A massive congratulations to our very own Vicki Finn Smith who has worked relentlessly to achieve the ultimate dream of going to The CrossFit Games as a masters athlete this summer! Vicki has committed her life wholeheartedly to this goal and we know the sacrifices she’s made daily, with strict training, sleep, nutrition, and rest schedules, to name a few. Vicki we are so proud of you and the way you carry yourself. Always humble, always inclusive and always an inspiration to others. You’ve got this!”
Getting to the games has been a dream of Vicki’s for many years. It does however incur huge costs. She has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help her with travel, accommodation, competition costs etc. Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help her achieve her dream.
