On Friday 7th March a ‘Trashion Show’ was held at Barnard Castle Hub.  Newton Aycliffe Young People’s Voices from Silverdale Community House took part to create items of clothing, jewellery, accessories, which were modelled on the catwalk.
The items were all recycled; rubbish, rags, bottle tops and sweet wrappers etc, things that people didn’t want any more but could be put to good use.
The idea came about when we had Youth Workers over to stay from Turkey, Denmark and Bulgaria and we were coaching each other on how Youth Work is delivered in different countries.
As Groundwork North East is an environmental charity with the mission statement “Changing Places, Changing Lives” we were happy to help with this event to help people of all ages realise the advantages of recycling and how it could be made fun!
1.7 billion Items of clothes (30% of clothes) are left unworn at home.
Gypsy Hudgson from the Young Peoples Voices who walked the catwalk in our recycled dress said “The Trashion Show is all I’ve been thinking about and I would definitely do it again – it was great fun!”
