The news that Newton Aycliffe will have a town centre Police Station is welcome and a victory for common sense.

The U-turn made by the new commissioner Ron Hogg comes after the Police broke a promise to bring the HQ vehicle repair and warehouse unit to Aycliffe Business Park.

No doubt Ron Hogg believed Aycliffe had received a poor deal and wanted to restore faith in the Constabulary. He is cetainly shown to be a fair minded man and he will be received well in our community when he attends the Great Aycliffe Residents Association AGM on Thursday 21st March in St. Mary’s Church at 7pm.

The reasoning behind the decision worked in Aycliffe’s favour. The Constabulary will not be paying a high rent for premises on the Business Park and the logistics of having Police in the Town Centre near the Magistrates Court must make sense.

As can be seen from the photo, it is not a grand building, but as suggested by a GARA member it could look more impressive if the Town Clock, due to be moved, was placed on top!
