Last weekend we decided to head over to Teesside for the IKR Race.
Saturday, Round 5. For each of the heats Seb starts at the back of the grid with his class only having three drivers, we thought we would use this to our advantage and do some testing ready for the next Micromax Championship Round 6 – although in the wet we would have to run on an inferior tyre. Qualifying 4th overall and 1st in class.
So, we joined the Honda grid at the back in the wet: Heat 1, finished 15th; heat 2, finished 16th; heat 3, finished 17th. Seb worked hard from the back in each round.
For the final Seb asked for slicks to be put on, the track was drying so we took the gamble as every other driver was on inters. Again starting from the back of the grid, his tyres came on around lap four, he soon worked his way through the grid of drivers gaining 27 places and finished the final in second place, only 1.5 seconds behind first place.
Sunday, Round 6. The weather was much kinder on Sunday! For practice and qualifying we went out on inters and Seb qualified on pole with a time of 50.7 seconds, again with us joining the Honda grid we started at the back.
Heat 1 – Changed to slick tyres as the track was more or less dry, finished 7th overall (32 drivers), 1st in class.
Heat 2 – The track was fully dry, starts at the back working his way up into seventh again – gaining 23 places.
Heat 3 – At the back of the grid again bringing his kart home in fourth place overall, gaining 25 places.
The Final – At the start of the commentary the commentators said they were on Seb Corking watch to see just how far he could get his Micromax up the grid. The first grid of drivers go on the first green flag and the Micromax drivers go on the second green flag after the Honda’s clear, around 5 seconds later, the final is 10 laps. Lap 2 Seb was up to 22nd, Lap 5 he was up to 12th, last lap board comes out, he was up to 2nd place – “sensational driving from Sebastian Corking taking the Win” (David Sullivan commentator), taking 1st place from the back of the grid. Absolutely outstanding driving from Seb, he made 165 race overtakes over the weekend without any contact.
