Sedgefield Water Polo Club had 4 of its U16 boys selected to represent the North East region at the Inter Regions tournament held in Liverpool over the weekend of 1st and 2nd July. This is a prestigious tournament where each region of the country strives to show they are the best region in the UK.
Gregor, Kyle, Thomas and Aston were overjoyed to have been selected to represent the region, and were coached by Regional Coach Matt Graves, and Ben Alderson, who is also a current Sedgefield and GB player. Some of the games were very closely contested, with the boys only losing one game over the duration of the weekend – and this loss gave them the determination and positive spirit they needed to continue their fight to win the tournament. It was fantastic to watch how well the boys worked together as a team, which was evident from some of the unselfish goals scored; everyone was aware of the positioning of their team mates which allowed them to ensure that the person placed in the best position was able to score the goals. Support from the balcony was phenomenal and the atmosphere was amazing.
Congratulations also go to Gregor who won the tournaments Most Valuable Player award, alongside the team MVP award which he shared with goalkeeper Aston.
Team manager, Vicky Alderson, commented “it was fantastic to see how determined these boys were to win their games. They did everything that the coaches asked of them and worked exceptionally well together, both in an out of the pool.”
