A motorist received serious injuries after his car crashed into a bus shelter and came to a standstill in woodland.

The one-vehicle collision happened at about 10.35pm on Saturday September 30th near the A67 road junction with the B6275 at Piercebridge.

The Ford Mondeo was being driven eastbound from the Barnard Castle direction. The car has left the road and ended up in a wooded area.

The driver was initially taken to the Darlington Memorial Hospital before being transferred to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The male front seat passenger received minor injuries and was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Anyone who saw the crash or the car prior to the collision is asked to contact police on the non-emergency 101 number quoting incident number of 550 of September 30.
