Members of the County Durham Environment Partnership are backing the Big Spring Clean – and are calling on residents and community groups to follow suit.
The campaign, which was launched earlier this month (March) and runs until 18 April, involves a series of community litter picks at various locations around the county and in Darlington.
In the first fortnight alone, 13 clean-up sessions have taken place and 109 volunteers have collected 106 bags of rubbish.
Now the County Durham Environment Partnership, whose mission is to work together to make the county ‘altogether greener’, is showing its support for the campaign and is urging others to do the same.
Terry Collins, chairman of the partnership, said: “The Big Spring Clean is a great example of residents, community groups and schools coming together to help enhance our towns, villages, public spaces and countryside.
“The amount of volunteers who have already taken part, and the number who are registered, is testament to how important a clean and litter-free environment is to us all and we would encourage even more people to lend a hand.
“As a partnership, we support a range of events and campaigns like the Big Spring Clean to make the county altogether greener and we will continue to focus on the problem of litter to mark this year’s World Environment Day in June.”
The Big Spring Clean is run by LitterFree Durham, Durham County Council’s Civic Pride team and Darlington Borough Council.
