Newton Aycliffe Youth Women 3 v Durham United Women 1
First game of the new season and what a game.
The opening 10 minutes was end to end with both teams coming close. Aycliffe then got the ball down and started moving it more quickly and with purpose, a great team passing move was ended with a perfect through ball from Alex to Kate who still had it all to do, after holding off her defender she finished calmly in the bottom corner 1-0. Aycliffe now were pushing for more, moving the ball through the thirds, but Durham were resilient in defence and Aycliffe couldn’t find that final ball. Just before half time Amber Dobson picked the ball up on the right wing, cut inside then curled an inch perfect pass with her left foot onto the chest of Annabelle Wilkinson McMillan who had made a late run into the box, a good piece of control beat her defender then a rocket of a shot left the keeper no chance 2-0, HT.
Second half, the ladies were asked to protect the ball and move it around and the goals would come. They did exactly that, Aycliffe now were pressing high, winning the ball and creating chances but Durham were still defending well and Aycliffe couldn’t get that clear shot at goal. Against the run of play, a long range effort from Durham caught Courtney off her line and halved their deficit 2-1. There was an immediate reaction from the team, from the kick off a well worked move found Alex in the box, her shot was blocked but substitute Tanisha Waters got herself into a great position to tuck home the rebound with her first touch of the game 3-1. Still, with 15 minutes to play, Aycliffe couldn’t add to their tally and the game finished 3-1.
Great team performance today, spectators all complimenting the team on how they were all working for each other and how fluid their passing was today.
Todays player of the match was Bethany Mulhearn, a solid performance at the back and helped the team transition from defence to attack quickly and effectively, well done Bethany.
