Walworth Primary School in Newton Aycliffe, provides specialist provision for children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs has achieved The Wellbeing Award for Schools on July 3rd 2019. The award demonstrates a national standard for positive mental health and emotional wellbeing which was developed in partnership with the National Children’s Bureau. Walworth is only one of a few schools of any type to achieve this award in County Durham and the first Special School.

Mr Wallbanks (Head Teacher) said “I am very privileged and grateful to receive this award on behalf of Walworth School. The feedback and comments shared by the Award Verifier are very welcoming and this acknowledged the 18 months of intense work we have undertaken to ensure that, this school led, effective practice and provision are in place which promotes Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health for the whole school community.”

The award has a focus on changing the long-term culture of a school, and embedding an ethos where mental health is regarded as the responsibility of all. The Award Verifier stated that “I am extremely impressed by the quality of your evidence which, on reflection, should be no surprise as it merely reflects the quality of the School and the education you offer.”

Mr Cooke (Lead Coordinator) explained that the award process has enhanced the school provision and staff, children, parents and governors who have all contributed to the success of creating a positive ethos and culture towards delivering key outcomes for all of the pupils.

All pupils who attend the school have an Education, Health and Care plan that relates to Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs and the award process has enhanced the schools’ focus on using commissioning services effectively to deliver impact for the needs of the children, staff and parents. We strongly believe that as a school, we encapsulate elements of practice which keep us at the forefront in supporting everyone`s Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health who are connected to Walworth.
