A County Durham museum has received top marks for school visits.

Killhope: the North of England Lead Mining Museum has again been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge.

The badge is presented by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom to organisations that provide a safe, high quality experience for youngsters outside the classroom.

Killhope was the first venue in the North East to receive the award when it was introduced in 2009.

Shelagh Connor, Killhope visitor services officer, said: “We are very pleased to receive the LotC badge again. It’s a fantastic endorsement of the effort we put into ensuring the best possible experience for all our visitors including school parties.”

The LOtC badge was introduced to make it easier for teachers to identify venues that provide quality educational visits.

In order to gain the quality mark, organisations must meet a set of six of quality indicators.

The awarding of the follows a series of recent honours and achievements for the museum, including a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, a Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award and a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
