A woman, whose fitness journey led her to lose over five stone, is encouraging others to join the gym ahead of a new membership special offer.

Amanda Hayton, who is a member of Durham County Council’s Meadowfield Leisure Centre, started going to the gym in August 2017 after health complications to do with her weight led her to collapse. She said: “I had put on quite a lot of weight over a few years and after collapsing at a concert I knew I had to do something. I began a healthy eating plan at the same time but knew my chances of success would greatly improve if I also did regular exercise.”

After finding her feet in a variety of different exercise classes, and in the gym, Amanda soon noticed the inches dropping and her health improving. In total so far, she has lost five stone and 34 inches and has not had an asthma attack since she began getting into shape two years ago.

Forty-two-year-old Amanda added: “I would encourage anyone to come along to either the classes or to use the gym. All the staff, trainers and other people attending soon made me feel welcome, helping me to fit in and make sensible equipment choices as my fitness began to improve. I have never felt self-conscious or like anyone was making any judgement about my size or ability.”

And now anyone signing up for a direct debit gym membership until Sunday, 30 June can join for £5 and pay nothing more until August.

Membership includes access to multiple sites within the chosen group, selected fitness classes and general swimming, where available. Those signing up will also be offered a one to one induction and a personal fitness plan.
