A few months ago, Rotary Newton Aycliffe joined a project which, for many years, has been facilitated by Rotary York Ainsty. The aim was to collect unwanted spectacles which were then cleaned, sorted and graded and ultimately shipped to charities in Africa. Local eye clinics then provide sight tests to ensure the specs delivered to each person are optically correct and are the right size and fit.
To date our club has collected over 8000 pairs of spectacles, more than all of the clubs in our group added together. This collection is coordinated for Rotary Newton Aycliffe by our longest serving Rotarian, Geoff Batchelor and we know he holds that record as he constantly reminds us. Nearly 47 years of ‘SERVICE ABOVE SELF’. Well done Geoff.
Many thanks to Specsavers, John’s at Neville Parade, Sainsbury’s at Cobblers Hall, The Big Club and all those in our community who contributed.
